I totally understand everything you describe...it's informative & validating to come to a group like this, and the strategies you shared represent why this thread can be helpful!

I retired to AZ a few yrs ago & half my town is snowbirds who leave for a good part of the year, so there's not many neighbors or friends around during the summer months. Last year I bought a special suitcase with drawers for my necessities because I love spur-of-the-moment road trips. Never dreamed it would come in handy for an unexpected hospital stay, but that's what happened. When I was admitted I asked my brother to grab the bag & I had everything I needed! At a time like that it makes me feel more comfortable have my own stuff...PLUS I didn't have to ask him to rummage around my place to find the things I needed!

I'm new to lupus but also have another autoimmune condition...online support groups have been my touchstone for a long time and I've even made a few wonderful in-person friends through them over the years!

Thanks for responding, Barbara. The helpful topic of self care doesn't seem to be too popular.

Having a bag on hand is a great idea! When I'm hospitalized I'm always left without some stuff I'd like to have like my phone charger, a sweatshirt, and definitely my Kindle. It's just a little nicer when we can have some stuff from home to make us more comfortable. Nowadays grabbing a phone charger is second nature and I would never be without it in the hospital.

When were you diagnosed with lupus? I never imagined there would be online support groups for lupus. I used to be so in the dark and so unconcerned about having lupus.

I always have a bag backed. But I included undies, toothbrush tooth paste baby powder deodorant pj bottoms a charger book socks or slippers Pony tail holders brush I learned in 2008 when I spent most of that year in the hospital that these are things that can easily be put in an over night bag and put in the closet for when you need it.

I still have that bag packed because for me you just never know when I will be admitted.

au contraire - this thread is doing pretty much what i wanted it to do when i established it…..for example, you get to talk about the self-care wisdom of having your bag packed & ready to go, while others. like tink. can sing the virtues of daily exercise - such as pole dancing - as a means of staying in shape. [biggrin]
