I have been battling horrible mouth sores for almost a year. They won't go away. They will get better and then they will flare up soo bad. I'm taking folic acid and I changed my toothpaste to a sulfate free. Anything else I can do?

Magic mouth wash a prescription lidocaine rinse.  Mine get infected. The magic mouth wash helps both for pain with my "normal oral sores" and also when infected.

Magic mouth wash does nothing. I also have the viscious lidocaine and it does nothing. I'm currently using the lidocaine ointment on my gums. It's the only thing that takes the edge off.

Yes, that's why I specifically joined a lupus message board. I'm hoping to find someone who has had similar history. Not that I wish this on anyone. I've had lupus since roughly 98 and this whole sore thing is new. Every time I've had a flare my symptoms have been the same. This is a whole new ballgame. I also have RA and fibromyalgia.

Maybe check and see if the magic mouthwash is old.  Magic Mouthwash  I think should usually numb some of the pain as it is lidocaine. Ur right though in that it doesn't cure them.  When I went to my dr. with second infection, the dr. had to renew my prescription as it was old and ineffective. Sorry to hear ur having these problems ! I hate oral sores, I can't eat when I'm get them
Have u looked into HSV as a cause ? If HSV (viral) u can use lysine gel it is over the counter at GNC. Maybe try the lsyine gel anyway.

I get it Brandi. Just didnt know anything about your history and lots of folks come here without a dx. No offense. Mouth sores can happen for a number of reasons.

yes, no one can figure the cuase of mine out. I have SLE dx which explains my usual sores on the roof of my mouth but beyond that.   When I go out in the sun for long periods of time, I get infected oral sore  with pus and swelling and black and yellow coloring.  I get anti virals, anti biotics, prednisone when it happens.  Acadmic rheumatolgoy center told me maybe look into a biopsy next time it happens.  :(

I get new rx on a regular. Will steroids help? I have them I just hate taking them because they make me fat but I'd rather have no pain. I've seen 4 or 5 different specialist for these sores. They all blame lupus. I originally thought it was thrush and was treated for it but it didn't get better, antibiotics didn't help. I started the plaquinil and folic acid and they were really getting better. Like almost healed and I ate a cheeseburger that tasted a bit salty, which I can't have with sores and it lit my mouth up. The next day they were back full force. This was two days ago.

Prednisone is strong anti immflammatory so I need for the swelling if infected as I look like someone on the plastic surgery show Botched, I'm not kidding.  My lip is swollen to the point I can barely open it. For normal mouth sores on the roof of my mouth not infected I don't use prednisone.  I'm not sure if prednisone would help normal oral sores.  On one hand as they are cuased by sle they might, but rlly not sure as no dr has brouhgt up to me of going on prednisone for oral sores.  Prednisone has many side effects as u said such as weight gain and the list goes on to more severe ones from there such as ostoeporosis etc.. so my personal prefrence is to put up with oral sores as while they are annoying  but they are not life threatening. I'm trying to stay off prednisone unless organ damage. I know wat u mean about salt, it hurts so bad !  Mouth sores do rlly suck though, especially when I can't eat.  They should be called the "lupus diet" and I'm underweight paritially due to them :/

Thrush I think may be fungal and antibiotics for bacterial. So I guess that leaves viral (hsv) herpes cold sore virus or directly realted to the SLE or some other condition.  Maybe if u have them at rheum u could maybe ask if they think an anti viral would help. I was told next time try for a biopsy with a dermatologist.  I also wonder if its possible to have discoid lupus on the mouth/ lip as I get mine after sun exposure that then gets infected as I think mouth has alot of bacteria but I haven't asked a rheum if that's even possible and hsv can also be triggered by sun exposure. I rlly hope ur mouth gets feels better.

I take me from which is not as harsh as prednisone. I've also taken valtrex to try to clear the sores up. I wondered if I had sjogrens as well but my husband said my sores look exactly like lupus sores

I have mouth sores for years now I spoke to my rhyme but this issue and he said it was a side affect from prednisone, then a few year after I started with the mouth sores I also notice my skin has gotten thin. For example, if I wash my face w a wash cloth my face is complete bruised, I don't know what it is but I'm still living with these issues,

Good luck to you
Hope you feel better

That's strange.. I haven't been taking steroids. I'm sorry they do that to you because we need them sometimes. I wouldn't wish this on my enemy.

Hi Brandi!  My doc at Johns Hopkins prescribed Triamcinolone Acetonide 0.1% for mouth ulcers (can also be used for nose ulcers).  You just put the paste on a Q-tip to spread on the affected area three times a day.  I also gargle w/ the aforementioned Magic Mouthwash when I can't eat due to the pain.  hope this helps <3
