Markers May Predict Joint Symptoms in Kids With Lupus

Clinical and laboratory features can help predict which children with systemic lupus erythematosus are likely to develop arthritis as part of their disease course, a cross-sectional study found.

After adjusting for sex and race, the risk of arthritis was increased two-fold among children who had malar rash at baseline (HR 2.1, 95% CI 1.1-3.6), according to Sangeeta D. Sule, MD, PhD, of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, and colleagues

In addition, the presence of ribonuclear protein (RNP) antibodies was associated with a nearly two-fold risk (HR 1.9, 95% CI 1.1-3.4), the researchers reported online in Pediatric Rheumatology.
