Prior to my diagnosis i was applying for life insurance policy. A bit over weight i got denied and vow to lose the weight. Over a year and a half i lost the weight and improve my health. However, i got very symptomatic and got diagnosed with SLE. Now im revisiting this life insurance policy again, especially now that i am pregnant. I spoke with my broker to look into my options for life insurance with a preexisting condition.

Does anyone have any advice on this topic??

Note: Im newly diagnosed this year in April; on hydrochoroquine; and experiences hives, joint pain and stiffness; and GI issues

Thank you in advice

I was lucky to have gotten my insurance through work a long time ago......and I have govrt health care too.......Even though that has it's problems.

My sister and I were talking about Obamacare the other night....and I didn't really understand how it works.  Although, I have heard some nasty things about it.

Not trying to open up a can of political worms here.....but what exactly is Obamacare?  And has it helped anyone?

ObamaCare allows anyone to medical insurance. if you have a pre-existing condition most insurance companies will not except you. With obamacare it allows you to be covered no matter what. Baker has obamacare and can better explain it. I also heard that come January 1st the price will go up.

The concept is good but you are limited to what hospital and what doctors you can see.

Under Obamacare I have gotten insurance through the "Marketplace" where you can compare regular insurance companies and their different plans that they are going to offer to people through the Marketplace. You have to make sure your doctors and hospital systems are covered by the plans you are looking at and at the end of the year you may be looking for new insurance because the company you were dealing with has decided to not be part of Obamacare and the Marketplace anymore. I believe that as of November 2nd I have to start looking for my 4th insurance provider in 4 years. My biggest problem in finding a new plan is that my doctors are not all part of the same system. But I will not change any of them.

Hi DBK, I'm a 110lbs but I have lupus for 15yrs now, I had applied for life insurance over the yrs and all of them denied me, I think its because of the SLE I have

Good luck hope you get it.

Mr, Bun, Obamacare doesn't help anyone! My husband worked for NYCMTA and my kids and I have the best insurance but under Obamacare we have to paid a penalty on our taxes for having such a good insurance. Under Obama care they added an extra $12,000 onto our tax a year , and if some people don't have insurance they have to pay a penalty on tax time, and I can't believe Hillary is going to continue this, not to mention that they are forcing people to buy an insurance under obamacare that no Dr takes.

I read it through.....and I'm still confused lol.

Suffice it to say...... I think we are in the same boat.

I've only gotten health insurance through Obamacare. There is no penalty if you have private health care coverage, but if the government finds out you don't you have to pay a penalty.

I can no longer buy life insurance or long-term health care coverage. The weird part to that was that each company that I asked told me that my use of steroids (prednisone) was the red flag to them. They didn't care about the methotrexate.

On most life insurance policies Lupus is an exclusion, and I am denied. Depending on the severity of your symptoms you may qualify for Social Security Disability. Contact local SS office. I've been on for 8 years..

It can be a confusing system. I was a claims adjudicator for 7 years, I can help with basic questions if you like.

In Ohio the middle class has dwindled so much that tons of people qualify for Medicaid. The state just (silently) changed the rules. It was costing them too much so they eliminated the spenddown, and slashed income limits. Now a ton of people (like me) no longer have secondary insurance because I'm $70 a month over their new limit. They are making the 20% our responsibility, and if we can't pay then the hospitals have to eat it under HCAP. Some doctors accept HCAP some don't. I'm reapplying as I haven't worked in weeks so I will qualify even under the new income limits.

Redhighheels - I thank God everyday for Obamacare. Without it, my boyfriend would be dead from cancer. With Obamacare, he got insurance that allowed him the best care possible. Surgery, 12 rounds of chemo, followup care and meds were all covered. Now he is healthy and we are looking at a future together thanks to Obama.

Obamacare helps as long as you watch carefully the plan you choose. One year I chose the wrong plan and ended up paying for for everything because I didn't like the hospital system that it covered and I refused to switch doctors. The only good thing was that I was doing a clinical trial for my rheumy and didn't have to pay for her or the trial medication.

This year I had good insurace, but they are pulling out of Obamacare so it is time to look for a new plan as of today, to take over on January 1st.

As a 30 year veteran of the life insurance industry I can tell you lupus is sometimes more difficult to find coverage for, but it is possible. The key is knowing which life insurance carriers underwrite your situation the best. Lot depends on the stability and time since diagnosis. If I can help please let me know.
