Hello everyone,

Well, just made it to the Rheumatologist at the Cleveland Clinic.  He examined me and looked closely at my blood history.  He thinks that perhaps I am on the first stages of Lupus since I displayed 3 of the 11 symptoms to diagnose Lupus and I need 4 out of the 11. He said to watch for a rash, mouth ulcers or any other sign of Lupus in my body.  He prescribed me Plaquenil 200 mg twice daily. However, this is the second opinion I get from a Rheumatologist.  The first rheumatologist I saw 2 weeks ago ruled out Lupus completely and diagnosed me with Fibromylagia so he prescribed me Elavil.  I am not sure which doctor to follow.  I began taking Elavil about 2 weeks ago and I started to feel a bit better because it helps relax the muscle and the pain is not as strong as before.  I have not started to take Plaquenil yet because I am not sure if I have fibro or Lupus. I am so confused!  Should I go with a third opinion? Thank you for your advice!

I guess it depends on the symptoms and what labs are off. Personally, I have opted for "monitoring" with the Rheum because the PQ made me sick. He is going to follow my complement and kidney function. If the Elavil helps, keep taking it!

It's likely that he is trying the Plaquenil to see if it helps. Keep in mind it takes a few months to build in your system so give it a chance.

Thank you for your responses.  UhOh, Yes...Elavil has helped a lot with the pain.  I guess I will continue to take it.  I have a follow up visit in 3 months so the rheumatologist will check the levels of the blood work.  I guess I just have to wait and see.  ;-)

I would trust the guy at the Cleveland Clinic for the simple reason they can afford to be very picky and choose only the best docs. If you don't have lupus, you still may have undifferentiated connective tissue disorder. I think Plaquenil is used to treat lupus, UCTD, and fibromyalgia, so I'd try it no matter which you're ultimately diagnosed with.

Plaquenil will actually not help Fibromyalgia. I think that is is how docs differentiate between the two (lupus and fibro).
