" if you don't like the topic, why read it?'

First of all,  the topic of this thread has nothing to do with LDN. YOU have interjected LDN into this thread (and many others) akin to a snake oil salesman, despite the fact that your claims have been challenged many times over.
Again, you do not have a lupus dx and to come on here and suggest to extremely ill folks that that DO have lupus that this will help is shameful.

Repeating this information:

The website, lowdosenaltrexone.org, embellishes the preliminary research and presents LDN as an effective treatment. They list that it is effective for:

Cancers:

* Bladder Cancer
* Breast Cancer
* Carcinoid
* Colon & Rectal Cancer
* Glioblastoma
* Liver Cancer
* Lung Cancer (Non-Small Cell)
* Lymphocytic Leukemia (chronic)
* Lymphoma (Hodgkin’s and Non-Hodgkin’s)
* Malignant Melanoma
* Multiple Myeloma
* Neuroblastoma
* Ovarian Cancer
* Pancreatic Cancer
* Prostate Cancer (untreated)
* Renal Cell Carcinoma
* Throat Cancer
* Uterine Cancer

Other Diseases:

* ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease)
* Alzheimer’s Disease
* Ankylosing Spondylitis
* Autism Spectrum Disorders
* Behcet’s Disease
* Celiac Disease
* Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
* CREST syndrome
* Crohn’s Disease
* Emphysema (COPD)
* Endometriosis
* Fibromyalgia
* HIV/AIDS
* Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
* Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
* Parkinson’s Disease
* Pemphigoid
* Primary Lateral Sclerosis (PLS)
* Psoriasis
* Rheumatoid Arthritis
* Sarcoidosis
* Scleroderma
* Stiff Person Syndrome (SPS)
* Systemic Lupus (SLE)
* Transverse Myelitis
* Ulcerative Colitis
* Wegener’s Granulomatosis

Right there we have a huge red flag – a treatment that works for a long list of diseases with different etiologies. Many of the diseases on the list are auto-immune, and therefore an immunosuppresant could theoretically be applied to many auto-immune diseases. But many of the diseases on the list are not auto-immune.

Treating a long list of cancers is another red flag, as well as HIV/AIDS. The justification for this is that LDS “boosts the immune system,” this phrase alone also being another indication of a dubious treatment. Scientists do not talk of “boosting” the immune system because this concept is too vague to be of any use. The immune system in healthy individuals is probably already operating within optimal parameters, especially since immune activity is a trade off between fighting off invaders while not causing too much damage to the host. Increasing immune activity, therefore, does not always equal improving immune function. In individuals who have a weakened immune system because of chronic disease, poor nutrition, or toxicity their immune systems can be restored to more normal function with treatment – but these are often specific treatments that address an underlying cause.

Further, there is an inherent contradiction in simultaneously treating diseases that are auto-immune (the immune system attacking the host), and immunodeficiency diseases (like AIDS) and claiming to treat cancer by “boosting” immune activity. Increasing immune activity actually worsens auto-immune diseases, and suppressing the immune system would worsen AIDS. This is a difficult contradiction to resolve.

The end result is just another bogus treatment with claims that are literally too good to be true, based upon pre-clinical or preliminary evidence only. Proponents have turned into proselytizers – saying on their website:”

If you or someone you know has connections in the media, the medical community, or to those in developing countries involved in AIDS policy or treatment, please let them know about LDN.

Truly promising and science-based treatments do not need an organization to promote them. The science will speak for itself.

I'm kind of wondering why Mr Bun hasn't gotten in on this discussion.

In the original thread, Mr. Bun participated gladly.  Don't recall exactly my thoughts word for word.....but the gist of it was that I would be taking a pass on LDN.  Anything that "boosts" my immune system (which is presently running amok) scares the fluffy white cotton tail outta me.

How are you doing Bun?

This Bun is FUBAR at the moment.....and has retired to my rabbit hole.

There are other "miracles" out there too!  Autoimmune X discovered by Dr. Ronald Drucker (a chiropractor) on Facebook.  Also a drink called Thrive which cures all.  The problem with these cures is you have to keep taking them (and spending your $$$).  The first lesson of Lupus is there is no cure for Lupus.

lol Robin......no thank you!!

If i got a shot of LDN, right now..........at the current level that my immune system is attacking my body......I'm afraid I would disappear into a puddle like the wicked witch of the west.

Lichen planus has returned on my legs & feet.  My palms are covered in psoriasis blisters.  My lower teeth are abscessed.  My dermatomyositis has spread up my neck & onto my face, giving the appearance of a bad sunburn.  My eyes are swollen, i have an ear infection, my latest migraine just cleared (yay) and I have to make something to eat to keep down the antibiotics that are killing infection.

My lower remaining teeth are being extracted on Wednesday.  Here's hoping I don't hemorrhage uncontrollably like I did when my uppers were removed.

The clindamycin i'm taking causes nausea and diarrhea......it is enhancing my colitis beautifully and really helping my appetite.

I'm just a sparkly ray of sunshine today!!

And if anyone tries to sell me a "cure all" I still have enough strength to smack 'em upside the head.

Don't mess with a cranky bun.

Marilyn, please read this. Please read the entire article. I think this is the same article Robin referred to. It's from a neutral website (no Big Pharma ties to tick off conspiracy theorists) called Science-Based Medicine.  And especially consider the idea presented that by promoting LDN at this point, you may actually interfere with research on it. I know you believe it works for you. I'm not arguing that. But if you truly want to understand why some of us are having issues with your promotion of LDN on this site, here it is:

On SBM we have documented the many and various ways that science is abused in the pursuit of health (or making money from those who are pursuing health). One such method is to take a new, but reasonable, scientific hypothesis and run with it, long past the current state of the evidence. We see this with the many bogus stem cell therapy clinics that are popping up in parts of the world with lax regulation...

Recent claims made for low dose naltrexone (LDN) fit nicely into this model – a medical intervention with interesting research, but in a preliminary phase that does not justify clinical use. And yet proponents talk about it as if it is a medical revolution...

The science will speak for itself...

...Ironically, LDN promoters may in fact harm research into LDN by giving it a bad name. Researchers may be reluctant to hitch their careers, or funding agencies commit resources, to a treatment that has a dubious reputation. If the research is promising it will still get done, but if anything it is likely to be slowed by the efforts of the LDN promoters.

This is just one of the many ways in which pseudoscience poisons the system.

Mr Bun, I'm so sorry for all the problems you are having, it is a horrible disease. Well once again I got jumped on. My last post reported how I was feeling, I have not been pushing ldn anymore except to say talk to your doctor about it, some doctors do prescribe it and people do get good results from it.  Also they are taking ldn to Africa to help people there. Try it or not, I don't care, but for anyone interested I will post if it helps or hurts me. Have a good day everyone, Happy Mother's Day to all you MOMS out there!!! I am sick of all the negative replies from some of you, but thanks anyway. OOPS, I forgot ldn is not expensive.

First I want to add the doctor that discovered ldn's therapeutic uses, discovered it 30 years ago. He has passed away 3 months ago I believe. LDN homepage, discusses all the research they are doing, and is a non-profit organization. Nigeria is accepting "ldn use for HIV/AIDS and as an immune system regulator", after an extensive 3 month trial.     Love your cute little add ins you have.   You can read more on ldn homepage, take the site that says "latest news".    I'm thinking that post that was deleted might have been the one that I foolishly put my e-mail address in, the board may have deleted it, I assure you all that I didn't delete it. I would like to get along with you gals, now I feel like an enemy. I am truly sorry for any bad or mixed feelings, as that was not my intent!!!  HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY ladies!!!

Oops, The doctor that discovered ldn's uses for human's immune system was Dr. Bahari, he passed away in 2010. I also found a whole mess of trials being performed all over the world, including the USA. These have been going on for many years, so it is not a new discovery as some people here feared. Take care everyone.
