I've been experiencing a wide constellation of lupus-like symptoms, including another flare-up of pleuritic chest pain and lower G.I. issues, and am in process of trying to get a diagnosis of what's going on with me. When I went to the doctor for blood work (including an ESR test), I was jacked up on ibuprofen to manage the pain/inflammation. When I got my ESR/sed rate results back, they came back in the normal range.

I'm wondering: what does the medical community say about the use of NSAIDs during an ESR/sed rate test? Do they contribute to a false normal result? If so, is it significantly lower than if not on NSAIDs?

Also wondering if an ANA test would give a more accurate read, regardless of NSAIDs?

Welcome to the board, KNS. I think your questions would best be addressed by your physician. Regarding ANA results, I'm not at all sure if the use of NSAIDs has an effect on the accuracy of ANA test results. I suppose it could, but I'm not a doctor.Again, your questions are best directed at your physician. He/she will be able to explain in details.

Again, you're most welcomed here, and it would be helpful if you could share with us your doctor's answers to your questions.

Drugs used to treat other disorders, such as procainamide (for heart arrhythmias), hydralazine (a vasodilator) and even the tetanus vaccine can return a positive result.

I take anywhere from 10-60 mgs of prednisone a day plus pain meds daily my SED rate last week was 89 way above normal.

Note: Please excuse any misspelled works or grammar errors. I have CNS lupus and brain lesions and use a program to help me type
