Now that I know I have Lupus what does my future hold? I always had aspirations to gym the military or the corps. Should I shelf those dreams? Will I get turned away with a preexisting condition? What if I have a flare during bootcamp?

Are you referring to the marine corps?  If I were you I think I would try.  I'm sure if you walk into a recruitment office you'll get some answers.  You might even get some alternative suggestions.  It's better than wondering "what if?" for the rest of your life.

imho, there's another aspect to consider other than the "what if" of a missed opprotunity, which might provide more sensible guidance

it's called "what is"

that is to say,

black & hispanic women of child bearing age - population groups often targeted by SLE - have been joining the military for many yrs in record numbers

so, the military already has a major problem w/ lupus

With More Women in Military, the ‘Great Imitator’ Often Challenges Health Providers

if they find out your condition by either physicial/lab work or self-report, they might not be eager to add you to their problem

but if you’re looking for free health care (or edu),  go for it, as meg suggests….it's ok w/ this tax payer :  )

best...

I am sorry you need to question the military. Lupus sucks period.  It steals dreams.  I am more concerned with boot camp and being in the sun and what that does to a person with SLE.
If military is your dream meet with a recruiter and see what your options are given the challenges of this disease.

Hi CBK,

I'm from a career military family and at 18 I was refused and told to come back when I had a minor medical condition at the time. I'm a lot older now and have no idea how they handle these situations now but I know they are normally pretty particular.

Maybe things have changed since then.

Your future holds a wide range of things. When I first came here I thought life as I know it is "over"...

Nope it just began!

Some things may have been taken away but other things are given back...

Everything happens for a reason, you'll find out why that is.

Stay Strong
